The following morning, I was on the couch sipping a cup of tea, avoiding the urge to check the status of our skeleton scavenger photo on Twitter. Had we officially gone viral? I tried to remain optimistic that Biddy and I had successfully diverted the negative media attention from Kiernan Moffat. And no way were people going to identify us. This would turn out to be a positive situation. However, it probably wasn’t a good idea to mention it to the appraiser, who might not see the upside of another photo drawing attention to the estate and Skelly.

I’d been unable to resist checking email several times for a response from Ian. Nothing. It’d been twenty-four hours since I’d emailed him. Had my involvement with Skelly freaked him out? Rather than being neurotic over not emailing him, now I could be neurotic over him not responding.

The doorbell rang. Typically Biddy wouldn’t stop over at 7:30 a.m. on her day off. She’d likely never gone to bed, up watching our Twitter pic go viral. It turned out to be Gretta. She zipped inside along with the scent of coffee, steam rising from the to-go cup in her hand.

“Had to go into town. Out of coffee. Thought I’d drop off what I found a few hours ago.” Wired on caffeine, she’d likely pulled an all-nighter. “After searching two years of papers, I came across a juicy bit in April 1941. Not sure it’ll mean much for the case, but it’s interesting.” She handed me a copy of the article. “Sorry it’s not clearer. My printer is banjaxed. My son ordered me a new one. Should be here soon, hopefully. Anyway, it’s about a court appearance. Seems a woman’s husband stormed into the Moffats’ residence accusing Gilbert Moffat of making suggestive advances toward his wife. It notes the man’s name, not his wife’s. Gilbert denied it and in turn filed a charge against the fella for sullying his good name and using foul and abusive language in front of his family.”

No surprise Gretta had come across a court record same as Edmond. Half the newspapers content at that time included court cases with detailed transcripts for nosey neighbors’ reading enjoyment.

“Gilbert Moffat won the case,” she said.

That didn’t mean he’d been innocent.

“I best be getting back to it. Will be in touch.” As Gretta headed out the door, she turned to me and smiled. “And thanks a million. Both for assisting with my DNA test and occupying my time so that’s not the only thing I’m thinking about.”

“You’re welcome.”

A nervous feeling fluttered in my chest in anticipation of the woman’s test results. I wasn’t sure I was emotionally up to dealing with Gretta’s DNA discoveries over the holidays.

I sat at the kitchen table and read the article on Gilbert Moffat. This information, along with Julia—the woman at the nursing home—calling Gilbert a cad, put Isobel’s second husband in a better light than her first. It didn’t appear the war hero had been a stand-up guy when it came to his personal life.
